There comes a time when you have to invest in yourself to move to the next level. You do not have to do it alone but you do have to put in some effort and time. One of my best investments was becoming a coach. I had always had a heart for service and thought leadership, but it was during my doctoral program where I received the understanding of how it would all come together. During the program, someone walked into my life that would be one of the best coaches in my career and life. He made me realize the potential of the industry I have loved since I was five years old. Throughout my career in Education, he was there helping and guiding me along the way. There came a time when I did not need him as much professionally but he became one of my best friends instead.
Due to what he did for me I decided to become certified as a coach so that I could give back the knowledge and service that was given to me. I realize that I had knowledge and skills that I did naturally that others would love to learn. These skills could change lives and businesses while changing me all at the same time. I could make a difference and a living at the same time. This was a major turning point in my life. In December of 2014, I received my first coaching certification and I started my coaching career as a life coach.
As a Certified Life Coach, I learned how to ask open-ended questions to get the Aha moments from my clients. I learned how to tell if there are blocks and how to approach them. Some blocks you have should be hit head-on, some blocks need to be dealt with in pieces, while some blocks need to be explored to find the cause. But no matter what type of block it is, it needs to be addressed. This is the goal of a coach to help the client peel back the layers to find what lies underneath and so you can move forward. We subconsciously put up walls and layers to protect ourselves but the same walls and layers hinder us from moving to our greater. So this is the time when our crutch becomes our curse and we have to separate from it in order to go to our next step in life. That is the part of coaching I love, the action of asking the questions that are going to help your client reach their Aha moments to move to the next level.
Coaches come to your life for a reason and a season to give you the guidance needed to excel in their area of expertise. It is ok to have several coaches at a time especially when you are developing the whole person. You have to be ready for the work and you have to be open to change. The coach is going to ask you questions that you may not want to answer and give you assignments that you will not want to do but you have to remember that it is for your development and growth. The more outside of the box it is, the more you will step out of your comfort zone and expand your horizons for the better. Always remember that you do not know what you do not know, this means that there is more than what is in your current scope of knowledge.
Once I realized this, my business as a Social Media and Life Coach took off. When I realized that it wasn’t about me but about the impact on others it became easy to do what I was meant to do. If you know that coaching is what you want to do in life, go for your dream. People may not believe in your dream but it is not for them to say what you do with your life. Find a coach or mentor to help you reach your goal, get a certification, learn the skills and principles of coaching. Do what you have to do to be great because at the end of the day there is someone waiting for you to help them make their dreams come true. I hope this story inspired you to leverage your gifts and make a difference for others!
